The name "North East" seems to be a misnomer since the borough is positioned in extreme northwestern Pennsylvania, but it is so titled for its northeastern-most locale within Erie County.
The North East Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
North East is positioned in northeastern Erie County at 42 12 48 N 79 50 1 W (42.213385, -79.833711). It is surrounded by North East Township.
According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the borough has a total region of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
