Historically a large foundry town and industrialized and manufacturing center, after the diminish of trade in recent years Conshohocken has advanced into a center of riverfront commercial and residentiary development. In the county-wide slang, it is sometimes referred to by the colloquial nickname Conshy (/ k n i/; con-shee).

The name "Conshohocken" comes from the Unami language, from either Kanshi'hak'ing, meaning "Elegant-ground- place", or, more likely, Chottschinschu'hak'ing, which means "Big-trough-ground-place" or "Large-bowl-ground-place", referring to the big bend in the Tulpe'hanna (Turtle River, or undivided Schuylkill River). In 1940, a New York Times columnist noted lightheartedly that "Some of the inhabitants of Conshohocken, Pa.

Conshohocken is served by two SEPTA county-wide barns stations, both of which are along the Manayunk/Norristown Line.
